Talking Heads lead singer David Byrne sifted through supermarket tabloids to come up with this 1986 assemblage of "true life" anecdotes about small-town bizarreness in rural Texas. It's clever enough, I guess, though there's a sameness to the satire that wears on you after a while . . . like those one-dimensional lives Byrne keeps pokin' fun at, that go on without discernible variation forever and ever amen. My guess is that the script reads better than it plays, though Byrne probably thought it could play any old way and still be funny, which isn't quite true: too much of the basic idea does double duty for specifics of execution, and the satirical setups rarely move beyond their obvious initial premises. With John Goodman, Annie McEnroe, Spalding Gray, and Byrne himself as the ingratiating pop-eyed narrator; the music is by Talking Heads.
