Moneyball had already been nominated for six Oscars when the cameras started rolling on this cornball drama about an aging, irascible scout for the Atlanta Braves (Clint Eastwood) trying to patch things up with his overachieving attorney daughter (Amy Adams) during a swing through North Carolina. What's particularly shaming is that the earlier movie, about a coach who coldly reduces players to complex statistics, has more genuine heart than this predictably romantic and reactionary tale. Robert Lorenz, Eastwood's longtime assistant director, moves up to the lead spot but can't do anything with Randy Brown's ham-fisted script, which reduces every supporting character to a cardboard cutout and the iconic star to a
Saturday Night Live parody of himself (
Get off my baseball diamond!). With Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Robert Patrick, and Matthew Lillard.
