Tron: Legacy 3D

The Avatar of its day, Disney's live-action feature Tron (1982) more or less pioneered the use of CGI in movies, though its scarcity on video these days, as Disney ramps up this 3-D sequel, speaks to the theory that its special effects would be laughable now (the story was laughable then). Jeff Bridges returns as the hotshot computer programmer who disappeared into a dystopian cyber world, though the story belongs mostly to the son who goes looking for him (Garrett Hedlund). The special effects are incredible, blah blah blah, but oddly, the most effective element here is the original movie's striking visual design—everything pitch black except for the luminescent piping on the costumes and foreground objects—which was inspired by the primitive arcade games of the early 80s. Bruce Boxleitner reprises his role as the villain, and a digitally doctored Michael Sheen turns up as the second-string baddie, a fruity albino who tosses off giggly one-liners. Joseph Kosinski directed.
