Tree Abuse

Dear Editor:

Thank you for the Neighborhood News article by Ben Joravsky on July 15 about the tree damage caused by the paving machine.

I protest the ruining, by extreme heat, parts, large or small, of over 40 trees during the recent resurfacing on Rogers Avenue from the Metra on the east to Ridge Avenue on the west. All year long trees are an important part of our lives. We especially look forward to the leafing time in spring and the wonderful shade which trees afford in summer.

I do not believe that the most important question is whether the trees are permanently ruined or not, though, of course, that would be the ultimate tragedy. Most important is whether any damage to them should be allowed. On some of the trees at least one-fourth of the leaves were killed. Heat from the paving machine was so intense that some people in their dwellings even 25 feet from the machine had to shut their windows. "Progress" should not be an excuse for destroying parts of trees in any way, even temporarily.

Mayor Daley proclaims to have a love for trees. Let him demonstrate it by protecting them from devastation!
