Ann has just kicked out her obnoxious, philandering, abusive boyfriend Dave and invited her gentle, kind, accommodating coworker Patrick to move in. Naturally, Dave launches a campaign to destroy Ann and Patrick's relationship. A play with a plot as simple and a cast as tiny as Treats requires dead-on performances to work. Unfortunately Andrew Pond, who plays Dave, the most pivotal of the three roles, shows only the bullying and none of the charm that would be necessary for the situation to shake out the way it does. Lana Smithner's Ann doesn't help: she comes off as too young and inexperienced to give her sparring with Dave much venom. Director and set designer Jason Fleece deserves special mention for creating an apartment so distractingly ugly and filthy it actually undermines the play. Are the characters real grown-ups, or just self-absorbed college students? —Aimee Levitt
