Traveling Salesman

Age: 28

Rooms: Three. Rent: $1,100

Location: Bucktown

How long he's been here: Moved to the U.S. from England in late September '01, to this apartment that December. His girlfriend came over and lived with him for a while but moved back to England this past March. "It was a friendly breakup."

Ping-Pong Table: Bought it for the ex-girlfriend. Might trade it in for a pool table.

Bobblehead Cowboy: "No idea" who Troy Aikman is.

Not Pictured: Seeds of Change artificial organic entrees (his other favorite meal is baked beans on toast); English flag (not the Union Jack but the emblem of Saint George--a red cross on a white field); family photos; six-speaker sound system. "I've had 40 people dancing in here."

Lost Somewhere: "My friggin' passport. It's got my visa in it, too."

In His Own Words: "I didn't know anybody here for the first two months and it was extremely scary. Then I met Pat--he was extremely drunk. He introduced me around."

Art accompanying story in printed newspaper (not available in this archive): photos/Lloyd DeGrane.
