Writer-director-choreographer McKinley Johnson has packed this stage history of Fisk University's acclaimed Jubilee Singers with soulful, soaring renditions of traditional African-American spirituals ("Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen," "I'm Troubled in Mind") performed by fine singers. But he's less successful in his attempt to tell the story of the a cappella group, formed in 1871 to raise money for historically black Fisk. That's because his accurate but fragmented account of its rise from hard-scrabble beginnings to international triumph tends to feel more like a book report than a drama. Still, whenever the story goes out of focus, the cast is ready with another wonderful song. —Jack Helbig
