Planted in the space that used to be the Mexican joint Pancho’s, Township, a collaboration between former Treat owner-chef Tamiz Haiderali and Brian Peterson of MP Productions, is part restaurant, part modest-sized music venue, and still nailing down an identity. Aside from a subtle brushstroke or two, Township’s menu doesn’t go nearly as heavy on the Indian accents as Treat did—hell, there’s a turkey panini and a beer-battered cod sandwich on the menu. Even the stark decor, though crisp, almost seems unsure of itself. Regardless of theme, however, the food was above average during my visit. The flavorful beet salad with warm goat cheese was a great starter, and the samosas—six dollars for a pair, mind you—were, well, samosas, which are pretty universally good. I ordered the caprese panini and was happy that the taste of the buffalo mozzarella snuck through the flavors of the tomato, basil, and ciobatta; my friend deemed the cod fresh tasting and not too oily, adding that the pickled onions were a nice touch. Township also has Dark Matter coffee and an expansive beer menu at both the restaurant and venue—the selection boasts Rogue, Three Floyds, Great Lakes, and the like—though every one seemed about a dollar overpriced. Brunch features a handful of benedicts and a couple of peculiar yet enticing options like the saag paneer scramble. Cash only.
