Touche Amore, Mewithoutyou, Seahaven, Caravels

When: Sat., Feb. 22, 5 p.m. 2014
Price: $17
Touche Amore front man Jeremy Bolm is the kind of music nerd I’d like to hang with, preferably in a record store jammed with LPs—when Boston label Run for Cover gave him $50 to spend for its “Record Selection” video series, he went to Armaggedon Shop and talked about the different pressings of Texas Is the Reason’s Do You Know Who You Are? with a contagious giddiness. Bolm’s endearing personality surfaces in Touche Amore too, and his lyrics and delivery are part of what makes the aggressive screamo on last year’s Is Survived By (Deathwish Inc.) feel so lively and approachable, even when he’s screaming so hard that you can picture the bulging veins in his neck. The band is tight as hell, smoothly segueing from sweeping, spacious slowcore to tidal waves of boisterous posthardcore; the album flows from track to track so well that you sometimes have to watch your iTunes interface to tell when one song ends and the next begins. Is Survived By is one of my favorite emo releases of 2013, and given what a remarkable year it was for the genre, that’s really saying something. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of the way Bolm’s raw lyrics for “To Write Content”—where he bares his feelings about aging and struggling to say something meaningful with his band—ratchet up the tension as the gnarled and caustic guitar cranks up the volume. —Leor Galil Mewithoutyou, Seahaven, and Caravels open.
