Set in 1970 Brazil during a military crackdown, this nuanced coming-of-age drama by Cao Hamburger exudes warmth without getting mired in nostalgia. A left-wing Sao Paulo couple are forced underground and drop their 12-year-old son (Michel Joelsas) at the apartment complex of his Jewish grandfather, unaware that the old man has just died. After the kid is taken in by an elderly next-door neighbor (Germano Haiut), generational, religious, and political difficulties ensue, most of them overcome as the pair bond. The surrounding multiethnic community rallies around the boy, sharing his obsession with the upcoming world soccer match. In Portuguese, Hebrew, and Yiddish with subtitles. 105 min.
