In 1924 British explorers George Mallory and Andrew "Sandy" Irvine were only 800 feet away from being the first to summit Mount Everest when they were engulfed by clouds and never seen again. While assaying Everest 75 years later, American mountaineer Conrad Anker came across Mallory's body, a discovery that made global headlines and inspired veteran BBC filmmaker Anthony Geffen to craft this vivid documentary around Anker's 2007 expedition retracing Mallory's route. In tandem with this bang-up adventure—where Anker and British partner Leo Houlding replicated recorded climbing conditions by adopting early 20th century clothing and gear—runs Mallory's fascinating life story, relayed through letters, photos, news accounts, interviews with descendants, and rarely seen archival footage of the 1924 expedition. With the voices of Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Alan Rickman, and Natasha Richardson.
