This wacky “science fiction fantasy” (2005) by Werner Herzog looks like it was made for a few thousand bucks, but it's held aloft by the filmmaker's inexhaustible curiosity and wonder. Herzog interweaves footage of a space shuttle crew in zero gravity, arcane lectures by mathematicians, and an eerie jazz score by cellist Ernst Reijseger and Wolof singer Mola Sylla, all held together by scenes of actor Brad Dourif, playing a space alien stranded on earth for decades, prowling around a desert town. The visitor narrates the story, and he's green with envy as the shuttle crew navigates the Interplanetary Transport Network to land on and explore his oceanic home planet. By the time Herzog tried to pass off jellyfish as Dourif's old pals, my indulgence was nearing its end—but then so was the movie. 81 min.

Sorry there are no showtimes for The Wild Blue Yonder on Saturday, November 21.
