Jonathan Levine's funny and sincere coming-of-age drama follows a Jewish B-boy (Josh Peck) from the Upper West Side of Manhattan as he tries to survive the summer of 1994 before going away to college. His only real friend is an aging hippie psychiatrist who buys pot from him (Ben Kingsley, having the time of his life), though romance beckons in the form of the doctor's pretty, jaded stepdaughter (Olivia Thirlby). With its sentimental male bonding and premature 90s nostalgia, the movie suggests that Levine may have some growing up to do himself. But the characters are sympathetically drawn and the modest wisdom rings true. With Famke Janssen, Jane Adams, and Method Man. R, 101 min.
