Ehren Kruger, screenwriter for The Ring, penned this terminally dull horror flick, which somehow attracted high-caliber actors John Hurt, Gena Rowlands, and Peter Sarsgaard. A young hospice worker in New Orleans (Kate Hudson) gets herself a job at a private home on the bayou, taking care of an old man who's had a stroke (Hurt, who looks as pink and raw as a baby mouse). Before long she learns that the house was the site of voodoo rituals and a lynching, which have left behind some seriously bad karma. The surprise ending is neatly done, but the characters are so thin that waiting around for it is no fun whatsoever. Iain Softley (K-Pax) directed. PG-13, 104 min.
