More than a decade after Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Johnny Depp takes another stab at playing his old pal Hunter S. Thompson—aka "Paul Kemp"—in this screen adaptation of the writer's early autobiographical novel. The book recounted Thompson's escapades as a young reporter in San Juan in the early 60s, though it wasn't published until the late 90s, when the writer's work had grown so tired that even his juvenilia began to look good. "I've got no voice," the hero admits in the movie. "I don't know how to write like me." Therein lies the problem: despite some scattered moments of bad craziness involving the hero and his drinking buddies (Michael Rispoli, Giovanni Ribisi), the spine of the story is no strange and terrible saga but a conventional morality tale in which the Thompson character gets mixed up with an American real estate barracuda (Aaron Eckhart) and his luscious girlfriend (Amber Heard). Bruce Robinson (Withnail & I) directed his own screenplay; with Richard Jenkins.
