The Princess Diaries (2001) gave Garry Marshall a chance to retool his Pretty Woman fantasy for a preteen audience with its tale of a high school wallflower (Anne Hathaway) who discovers she's next in line to the throne of a tiny European country. But its chief pleasure was Julie Andrews's comic turn as the frequently flustered queen, who arrives in the land of corn dogs to mentor her awkward granddaughter in the principle of noblesse oblige. This dutiful and charmless sequel transfers the action to their picturesque kingdom, where Hathaway, now a college graduate, must find a husband in order to retain her title. Andrews is still a treasure, but the series's currency is plummeting. G, 114 min.
