85 minutes · 2013
In this dreary Canadian drama (2013), two Jewish teens (Grisha Pasternak and Milda Gecaite) hiding out in a remote barn during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania meet and gradually fall for each other, their romance occasionally playing like a more depressing version of The Blue Lagoon. The main characters are introduced in the present day—the man is an elderly shomer who sits with the recently deceased, the woman his latest corpse—though flashbacks depict their past together, and even more flashbacks reveal the tragic fate of their families. Occasionally the multiple time lines bleed into one another, as when the old man envisions the dead woman reverting to her youthful self. Naomi Jaye uses numerous close-ups to heighten the sense of passion, but the wooden performances inhibit any drama. In Yiddish with subtitles.
