A steely performance from Robert Duvall anchors this 1974 crime flick, adapted from a Donald Westlake novel and directed by action specialist John Flynn (Rolling Thunder). Paroled from prison, a career criminal (Duvall) learns that his brother has been iced by the mob and decides to get even, assisted by his girlfriend (Karen Black) and his old partner (Joe Don Baker). This was produced in the wake of The Godfather, but Flynn reaches back to the crime thrillers of the 40s and 50s for his choice supporting cast: Timothy Carey (The Killing), Marie Windsor (Force of Evil), Jane Greer (Out of the Past), Elisha Cook Jr. (The Maltese Falcon), and Robert Ryan, in one of his last roles, as the dapper mob boss who becomes Duvall's ultimate target. Jerry Fielding wrote the coolly ominous score.

Sorry there are no showtimes for The Outfit on Monday, December 10.
