None of our staffers wanted to review this French drama, probably because its high-concept log line promised all kinds of awful: a French-Jewish couple in Tel Aviv discover that, years earlier, their son was accidentally switched at birth with the child of a Palestinian family in the West Bank. In fact the movie is quite touching when it focuses on the anguish of the two couples, each grappling with the reality that their teenage son is a stranger and a stranger is their teenage son. Only when the expected political ironies and diatribes kick in does this become as bad as its premise signals. The most poignant moments belong to Emmanuelle Devos as the Jewish mother and Areen Omari (Laila's Birthday) as her Palestinian counterpart, both of them giving in to maternal feeling for young men they barely know. Lorraine Levy directed. In French with subtitles.
