For his Dylan biopic I'm Not There, Todd Haynes used six different actors to portray the chameleonic singer over a 20-year period, but he could have used three just to capture the 1963, '64, and '65 performances recorded in this fascinating documentary. It consists almost entirely of black-and-white concert footage shot with a single camera by Murray Lerner; songs are presented mostly in their entirety, and the periodic nature of the movie highlights Dylan's dramatic evolution from protest singer ("Blowin' in the Wind") to folk-pop balladeer ("It Ain't Me, Babe") to hackle-raising electric rocker ("Maggie's Farm"). Judiciously chosen crowd footage strengthens the movie's narrative arc: as Dylan outgrows the festival, progressing from talented newcomer to generational icon, you can feel the folk movement fading into insignificance. With Joan Baez and Mike Bloomfield. 83 min.
