In this soggy, generic family drama, a childless couple (Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgerton) discover that the little boy of their dreams has grown out of their garden. This might have been a decent fantasy, but writer-director Peter Hedges takes a strangely prosaic approach, focusing on the parents' inferiority issues and a subplot about the closing of a local factory. (He barely explores his most interesting ideas, like the boy sprouting leaves from his skin, and squanders such fine supporting players as Dianne Wiest, David Morse, Ron Livingston, M. Emmet Walsh, and Rosemarie DeWitt.) It's hard to believe that Hedges once wrote some decent light fiction (What's Eating Gilbert Grape, An Ocean in Iowa) before he started making greeting-card movies like Dan in Real Life and this one.
