Billy Wilder first discovered the Jack Lemmon-Walter Matthau chemistry in The Fortune Cookie, and this version of the Neil Simon play could have used Wilder behind the camera too: it's easy to see him toughening the tone, sharpening the wisecracks, and gleefully pumping up the sexual connotations. What you get, unfortunately, is Gene Saks, turning in another of his stiff Broadway stagings. Still, for all its overfamiliarity, this is a good play, easily Simon's best, and Matthau and Lemmon inhabit it with grace and style. With Herb Edelman and John Fiedler (1968).
Director: Gene Saks
