Liliana Cavani's bondage melodrama garnered some serious reviews in 1974, but her subsequent two films—Beyond Good and Evil and The Skin—left little doubt as to the essential exploitativeness of her approach. Charlotte Rampling is the young woman who rediscovers the man who raped and tortured her in a Nazi concentration camp (Dirk Bogarde); instead of turning him in, she joins him in the seedy hotel where he works, and they pick up where they left off. With a little application and imagination I suppose one might read themes of political and philosophical import into this work, but Cavani's style remains stupidly literal and gaga. With Gabriele Ferzetti and Philippe Leroy. R, 115 min.
