Responding to the reported rise of Islamophobia in the U.S., in late 2011 a group of Muslim stand-up comics staged a series of free shows in predominantly conservative areas in an effort to spread cultural goodwill. This tour documentary was directed by two of the participating comics, Negin Farsad and Dean Obeidallah, which might account for both the casual vibe and the air of self-satisfaction. The movie concludes that most ordinary Americans have no problem with Muslims if they meet face to face; evidently, mediocre stand-up can be surprisingly effective in promoting ethnic and religious tolerance. For better and for worse, this feels less like a feature film than a stretched-out Daily Show segment; not coincidentally, Jon Stewart and Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead provide some of the superfluous talking-head commentary.
