Gerard Corbiau's La maitre de musique, a Belgian feature set around the turn of the century, is about an opera dropout turned teacher (Jose van Dam) who prepares two students—his teenage niece (Anne Roussel) and a young hooligan (Philippe Volter)—for a singing competition conducted by his archenemy (Patrick Bauchau). Mozart, Schubert, and Mahler are among the composers heard. Shown at the Chicago Film Festival in 1988, and nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign film.
