Two young siblings (Chris O'Neil and Rhiannon Leigh Wryn) find a box of toys sent from the future and, after playing with them for a while, begin to develop superhuman mental powers. This enjoyable fantasy was based on Lewis Padgett's 1943 sci-fi story “Mimsy Were the Borogoves,” though screenwriters Toby Emmerich (Frequency) and Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost, Jacob's Ladder) have erased Padgett's cerebral musings and faintly sinister tone in favor of a distinctly Spielbergian action-adventure narrative. The movie strains credibility once the children and their parents (Timothy Hutton and Joely Richardson) are rounded up by a Department of Homeland Security even more incompetent than the real one, but for a family picture this is still superior. Bob Shaye directed; with Rainn Wilson, Kathryn Hahn, and Michael Clarke Duncan. PG, 90 min.
