This 1946 biopic charts Al Jolson's progress from cantor's son to national institution. Jolson is played by Larry Parks (later a prime victim of the Hollywood witch-hunts), but the singing voice is Jolson's own. Alfred E. Green directed the tepid dramatic passages; the musical numbers, stylishly staged, are the work of cult director Joseph H. Lewis (Gun Crazy). With Evelyn Keyes and William Demarest.
