A box office phenomenon in France, this crowd-pleasing drama is based on a true story but sticks closely to the template for a Hollywood buddy movie. A superrich quadriplegic (Francois Cluzet) hires as his new caregiver a brash French Senegalese hustler from the projects (Omar Sy); when the zillionaire is warned by a friend that "these street guys have no pity," he replies, "That's what I want. No pity." Of course the odd couple become dear friends, and by the end of the movie the black character has learned to enjoy Vivaldi while the white one has developed an appreciation for Earth, Wind & Fire. The movie was promptly snapped up by Harvey Weinstein for a U.S. release, and how could it miss? C'est Rain Man rencontre Driving Miss Daisy! Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano directed their own script. In French with subtitles.
