Rafi Pitts (It's Winter) wrote, directed, and stars in this stark Iranian drama, which takes place amid the 2009 election protests and government crackdown. A sullen ex-con takes a night-shift job at a factory, only to lose touch with the family he's trying to support; when his wife is killed by a stray bullet during a shoot-out between demonstrators and police, the man goes mad and launches a kamikaze attack on the government. Pitts is the sort of minimalist director whose distanced camera set-ups and disaffected performances inhibit direct engagement with the story, forcing the viewer do most of the intellectual work. Given the urgency of the subject matter, his approach feels unnecessarily arty. In Farsi with subtitles.
