Based on a sensational real-life murder case, this 1925 silent melodrama stars Louise Dresser as a woman who gave up her opera career years earlier to become a mother and now putters around her ramshackle house alone, hitting the bottle and listening to a wax cylinder of herself back in the good old days. When her neighbor turns up dead, she becomes a key witness and a figure of fun in the press--the Kato Kaelin of the Jazz Age. Though completely forgotten now, director Clarence Brown was a respected Hollywood filmmaker for three decades, collecting five Oscar nominations and cranking out such MGM hits as Flesh and the Devil (1926), Anna Karenina (1935), The Human Comedy (1943), and National Velvet (1944).
Director: Clarence Brown
