The final installment in the Swedish trilogy based on Stieg Larsson's mega-selling crime novels, this 2009 thriller begins with the rescue of the dragon-tattooed, kickboxing heroine (Noomi Rapace) after she's been shot and buried alive by her uber-villain father and freakish half-brother. Her investigative journalist partner (Michael Nykvist) tries to protect her but learns she has enemies high up in a secret government intelligence division. Since the heroine spends half her screen time recovering from brain surgery, Rapace has less to do than in the first two movies, but she's striking in full punk regalia during a tense courtroom sequence. In place of romance there are numerous talky espionage scenes that make the movie feel like one of those labyrinthine cold war pictures from the 60s. Daniel Alfredson (The Girl Who Played With Fire) directed. In Swedish with subtitles.
