In this eccentric documentary, director-cinematographer Peter Mettler (Gambling, Gods and LSD) ruminates on a variety of issues relating to time, from the concrete (how different cultures have measured it throughout history) to the abstract (whether it even exists). The movie is structured like a series of Zen koans, Mettler introducing each area of inquiry on the soundtrack by proffering open-ended questions or philosophical musings. This narration can be risible ("Things don't have names; we just made them up"), but the stunning, poetic images more than make up for it, inducing a meditative trance. The interviewees range from a hermit who's adopted a pre-modern lifestyle on a small Pacific island to a group of particle physicists who conduct experiments with the Large Hadron Collider.
