The Earliest Known Photo of Men Drinking Beer

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through April 12 2014
Price: $20
Raise a glass to Sean Benjamin, the intrepid man who's figured out how to drink a beer while portraying the drinking of a beer. In his play within a play, the scene is simple, or ought to be. An author, a painter, and a political reformer pose for a photograph over a few brews while an actress outside the frame entertains them, replicating the conditions under which the you-know-what, Edinburgh Ale, was supposedly taken, back in 1843 Scotland. When the actor playing the reformer doesn't show up, the actress demands to play his part, exposing the artifice involved in reproducing any historical event. From there the charade unspools in increasingly strange loops till the actors are afraid to end the scene lest they die. Their dread may have tried my patience in the theater, but it's endearing in retrospect. —Jena Cutie
