An example of advocacy filmmaking at its most inspired, this 2007 video goes inside a violent maximum-security prison to document a rigorous ten-day Vipassana Buddhist meditation program undertaken by dozens of hard-core criminals, some of them murderers serving life sentences. Codirector Jenny Phillips, a psychotherapist working with penal institutions, facilitated the discipline's introduction to Alabama's Donaldson Correctional Facility, whose staff was eventually won over by the calm achieved by members of their volatile population. Drama and pathos arise from the inmates' stories, and from the perceived threat the secular practice posed for the surrounding BIble Belt community. Codirected by Anne Marie Stein and Andrew Kukura. 76 min.
