This fascinating 1957 film, based on a true story, concerns the hunt for a serial killer by the Nazi regime. When he's caught, Hitler himself orders a scapegoat executed for the most recent murder so the public won't know the extent of the true killer's crimes and lose confidence in the government. Robert Siodmak brings the stylishness of his American noirs to this troubling conflation of individual and governmental mass murders: when the killer reenacts his crimes for his captors, the camera focuses on his fateful movements across the countryside, leaving his captors out of the frame until the end of the scene—neatly conveying his isolating madness. In German with subtitles. 105 min.
