On TV it's usually called
All That Money Can Buy, with a big chunk of footage cut, but the 112-minute original should be worth a look. William Dieterle directed this adaptation of the Stephen Vincent Benet story in 1941, just as he was loosening up from his gray Warners “prestige pictures” (
Juarez, etc) and entering his period of high delirium (
Love Letters,
I'll Be Seeing You,
Portrait of Jennie). Walter Huston is Benet's “Mr. Scratch,” Edward Arnold is Webster; together they do battle for the soul of a struggling farmer (James Craig). With Simone Simon, Jane Darwell, John Qualen, and Gene Lockhart.
