If the notion of somebody risking his life for a bunch of balsam firs strikes you as foolhardy, this is not the show for you. John Reeger and Julie Shannon's holiday musical tells the tale of a ship captain from Michigan's Upper Peninsula who makes dangerous winter crossings of Lake Michigan to supply the people of Chicago with Christmas trees. Disavowing the profit motive, Reeger's script presents this undertaking as selfless, heroic, and terribly important. Only the captain's wife has the sense to point out that they're just trees. Still, Shannon's songs are rousing and the yuletide traditions of the mostly German-American characters are warmly and engagingly staged by director L. Walter Stearns. —Zac Thompson
