Byambasuren Davaa's combination of a simple plot and ethnographic documentary was key to her lyrical debut feature, The Story of the Weeping Camel (2003), about Mongolian nomads trying to adjust to modernity while also preserving the old ways. She returns to the same region, method, and theme for this 2005 portrait of another nomadic family. A little girl finds a stray dog, but her father fears it may have a wild streak passed on by the wolves that have been growing unchecked as more people head for the cities. This conflict provides most of the drama, but despite the exotic locale and the photogenic moppets, that's not enough for a satisfying movie. In Mongolian with subtitles. 90 min.
