Two plays about nuns dealing with heavy shit—Doubt by John Patrick Shanley and Agnes of God by John Pielmeier—are paired up in this offering from American Theater Company. In both scripts, a mature, no-nonsense sister (played each time by Kate Skinner, occasionally sliding into Dana Carvey's Church Lady character) clashes with her polar opposite following the mistreatment—or in Doubt's case, possible mistreatment—of an innocent. PJ Paparelli's staging is fast-paced and handsome, but neither play comes off here. Doubt's shifting power dynamic is lost thanks to Skinner's rigidity on the one hand and Lance Baker's unfocused performance on the other, as a priest who may be a pedophile. Agnes of God, meanwhile, is just one hysterical crying fit after another. —Zac Thompson
