Barrel of Monkeys offers a holiday edition of their long-running performance series, in which the troupe stages short plays written in collaboration with third, fourth, and fifth graders from Chicago's public schools. Many of the stories are as smart as they are bizarre: snowmen from Pluto outwit bullies, penguins sneak onto an airplane, a teddy bear argues his value with a slobbering child, and Santa goes to the gym, hoping to lose his trademark "bowl full of jelly." Whether it's silly or poignant, the Barrel team keeps the students' writing in the foreground. My only reservation: an 8 PM show isn't going to bring in many kids. But BOM promises a family-friendly Sunday matinee starting in January. --Suzanne Scanlon
