I'm pretty confident the people at Barrel of Monkeys could unload a minimusical on any topic whatsoever—be it silly, edgy, depressing, or diabolical—and I'd be charmed. I mean, utterly woozy with ticklish warmth. That the song-and-dance skits they perform in this revue—the 14 on the program I saw ranged from sci-fi fantasies about meat loaf to PSAs about karma—were written by CPS elementary school kids only raises the charm quotient. The ingenious costumes deserve a prize for tenacious use of construction paper; the original musical compositions are all catchy and sung in tune; and the troupe's dedication to harnessing the boldest, funniest, smartest, and sublimest streaks in their kids' literary inventions means they're not just monkeying around. It's a barrel of fun.
