Terence Blanchard

When: Wed., Feb. 26, 7:30 p.m. 2014
Price: $24-$48
For last year’s Magnetic (Blue Note) trumpeter Terence Blanchard invited the members of his young, forward-looking quintet to contribute material they’d written themselves—a gambit that has paid dividends, not only broadening the band’s sound but also giving his cohorts a more concrete investment in the music. The album’s overall sound is a moody, smoldering take on the music of Miles Davis’s 60s quintet—another group that relied heavily on every member to shape its collective aesthetic—but it’s burnished and transformed into something incontrovertibly contemporary, with the help of guest appearances by saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and guitarist Lionel Loueke. Recently Blanchard has been producing film scores, and this seems to have sharpened his mastery of atmosphere—the production is thick and smoky, with occasional heavy processing applied to Loueke’s playing. It’s not just that sound that provides the music’s moody heart, though—the record owes its impact to careful sequencing, tightly coiled arrangements (which nevertheless contain lots of open space), and high-level group interaction. For this concert Blanchard is accompanied by most of the core band from Magnetic—tenor saxophonist Brice Winston, pianist Fabian Almazan, and bassist Joshua Crumbly, with drummer Justin Brown filling in for Kendrick Scott. —Peter Margasak
