Oak Park location of the upscale Japanese chain.

Our Review

With outposts in Kansas and Chicago’s western suburbs, Sushi House now has a new location in Oak Park. There's a pleasant low-lit dining areas and two private tea rooms, plus a downstairs bar with flat-screen monitors displaying images of tropical fish swimming. Chirashi, sashimi on vinegared rice, is my touchstone menu item at Japanese restaurants, and here the dish has a freshness on par with many other sushi sources in our landlocked locale. We had a fine seaweed salad of crisp green, magenta, black, and white ocean flora, a nice crunchy starter. Eggplant stew is a lush clay pot of fresh, plump Asian vegetables with a sweet sauce balancing bitterness; Dan Dan Noodle, an upgraded rendition of Szechuan street eats, is ground pork and sliced veggies with a kiss of heat. Tempura was done light and right, and Sushi House seems a reliable place to sample a number of cooked and uncooked Japanese foods. The sake list has good range and is well selected: Ozeki "Sparkling Flower" is an unfiltered sparkling rosé perfect for predinner sips; we also enjoyed the unfiltered Aladdin, which had decent heft and a pleasing interplay of sweet and sour.
