An engaging 1937 Hollywood-on-Hollywood comedy with Leslie Howard as an eastern banker put in charge of a failing studio and Humphrey Bogart as the acerbic chief of production. Stand-in Joan Blondell teaches Howard how to unbutton his boiled shirt and get his eyes off the bottom line. The details of low-budget filmmaking feel unusually authentic, while director Tay Garnett's vision of the warm camaraderie essential to good filmmaking is appealingly utopian. With Alan Mowbray and Jack Carson. 91 min.
