Elia Kazan's 1961 film, in which he tries to do for Warren Beatty what he did for James Dean in
East of Eden. It doesn't quite take, and the film remains bogged down in the contrivances of its William Inge script—which naturally won an Academy Award. There is, though, a surprisingly rich Actors Studio supporting cast: Pat Hingle, Barbara Loden, Sandy Dennis, Zohra Lampert, Gary Lockwood, and an unaccountable Phyllis Diller. 124 min.
