Rated PG-13 · 100 minutes · 2006
Written by TV veteran Kriss Turner, this pleasant romantic comedy (2006) is essentially Far From Heaven with the races reversed: Sanaa Lathan (Brown Sugar) plays a successful financial adviser who scandalizes friends and family when she takes up with her white landscape architect (Simon Baker). Against all expectations, this delivers on its title, lightly satirizing a buppie milieu in which people still manage to feel oppressed while attending a black cotillion. Unfortunately nothing can mitigate the pain of seeing Alfre Woodard, a superb actress who's put on some back lately, consigned to the role of Lathan's frumpy old mama. Sanaa Hamri directed; with Blair Underwood, Mike Epps, and Donald Faison.
