Cozy, friendly corner bar with better-than-average pub grub, an impressive beer selection, and an impenetrable dartboard.

Our Review

One of the coziest corner bars in the city, the original Small Bar stocks more than 60 bottled beers and has another 13—from Pabst to Stiegl to a Lindeman's Framboise—on tap, but the friendly, knowledgeable bartenders are more than equipped to help you navigate them. The kitchen turns out better-than-average bar food: burgers, sandwiches, personal pizzas, and appetizers like fried calamari and baked goat cheese, not to mention ultracrispy deep-fried tater tots. There's also a jukebox loaded for bear and a dartboard whose vexing power to repel the straightest and truest of projectiles may well drive frustrated players into the arms of a Hercules Double IPA, a sweet, malty brew with a long finish that packs a punch worthy of its namesake.

Bar Details

Around since 1907, this cozy corner spot with its brick walls and tin ceiling represents the most old-school and authentic hangout of the Small Bar brand. The beer list is extensive, featuring 60-odd international and craft brews—a chalkboard lists the names of the impressive beers on tap (expect a new Three Floyds concoction most of the time). With its friendly staff and neighborhood ambience, this place epitomizes unpretentious class. —Kevin Warwick
