Directed by Christopher Kenneally—with coproducer Keanu Reeves serving as on-screen interviewer—this 2012 documentary traces the rise of digital cinematography and the fall of celluloid, and considers the future of movies as the industry grapples with the most vexing technological advance since the coming of sound. The talking heads include such heavyweight directors as Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, David Fincher, Danny Boyle, Richard Linklater, Christopher Nolan, Steven Soderbergh, Lars von Trier, and David Lynch. Yet the documentary is most valuable for its breadth, exploring how the fleet new medium has changed the creative equation for actors, cinematographers (Michael Ballhaus, Vittorio Storaro, Dick Pope), editors (Walter Murch, Anne V. Coates), and other postproduction personnel. As many of the participants note, digital technology is transforming not only the cinema but also its relationship with viewers; worries Scorsese, "I don’t know if the younger generation is believing anything anymore."
