This Idle Muse production captures both the elegant modernism of the iconic detective and the Victorian extravagance of his world. Based on an 1899 play by Arthur Conan Doyle and William Gillette, Steven Dietz's skillful 2007 adaptation combines several familiar stories from the canon, notably the two concerning Irene Adler (Elizabeth MacDougald) and Moriarty (sinister, wonderful Nathan Thompson). Luke Hamilton creates a witty, energetic, Byronic Holmes by drawing on Doyle's writing rather than the deerstalkered grandee of later stage and film portrayals. Even if the various storylines don't mesh perfectly, the individual scenes work, and Hamilton's perfect timing and luminous stage presence allow him to command the audience like a logician toying with a child's puzzle. --Keith Griffith
