Will Ferrell stars as a 70s pop singer who uses the earnings from his one hit to purchase the flagging Flint Tropics semipro basketball team; when the league tries to shut him down, star player Woody Harrelson comes to the rescue. Aside from
Kicking & Screaming, this is probably Ferrell's weakest comedy to date. There's no real reason it should be set in the 70s, except that the freaky wigs, loud clothes, and wall-to-wall soul classics are needed to bolster the nothing script. Kent Alterman directed; among the squandered acting talent are Andre Benjamin, Maura Tierney, Will Arnett, Andy Richter, David Koechner, Rob Corddry, Matt Walsh, and Jackie Earle Haley. R, 90 min.
